The Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death Rye Manhattan is in honor of the great patriot Patrick Henry who spoke the immortal words in Richmond Virginia in the St. John’s Church on 23 March 1775. In the audience were George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. This speech was instrumental in convincing Washington and Jefferson that the time was right to begin the War of Independence. Combat began April 19, 1775 just a few weeks after Henry’s speech, when the British tried to disarm the colonists at Concord, in Massachusetts.

Our Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death Rye Manhattan is made with craft Rye Whiskey from Reservoir Distilleries, in Richmond, Virginia. We blend it with a delicious and fruity vermouth from Pontica from eastern Austria. The two string flavors are not in combat but rather complement each other and give a rich complexity to this classic cocktail.

The distillery itself is not far from St. John’s Church. When you drink the Manhattan you can think of the sweetness of liberty and gain the strength to fight for it.

Die Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death Rye Manhattan ist zu Ehren des großen Patrioten Patrick Henry, der am 23. März 1775 in Richmond Virginia in der St. John’s Church die unsterblichen Worte sprach. Im Publikum waren George Washington und Thomas Jefferson. Diese Rede trug dazu bei, Washington und Jefferson davon zu überzeugen, dass die Zeit reif war, den Unabhängigkeitskrieg zu beginnen. Der Kampf begann am 19. April 1775 nur wenige Wochen nach Henrys Rede, als die Briten versuchten, die Kolonisten in Concord, Massachusetts, zu entwaffnen.

Unser Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death Rye Manhattan wird mit Craft Roggenwhiskey von Reservoir Distilleries, in Richmond, Virginia, hergestellt. Wir mischen es mit einem köstlichen und fruchtigen Wermut von Pontica aus Ostösterreich. Die beiden Streicharomen sind nicht im Kampf, sondern ergänzen sich gegenseitig und verleihen diesem klassischen Cocktail eine reiche Komplexität.

Die Brennerei selbst ist nicht weit von der St. John’s Church entfernt. Wenn Sie das Manhattan trinken, können Sie an die Süße der Freiheit denken und die Kraft gewinnen, dafür zu kämpfen.

The war is actually begun! The next gale that sweeps the north will bring to our ears the clash of resounding arms! Our brethren are already in the field! Why stand we here idle? What is it that gentlemen wish? What would they have? Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God! I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty, or give me death!”

Last time we tasted Bourbon whiskey, the most famous US whiskey.

Next, in our series surveying the incredibly rich craft whiskey scene in the US, we sample some really extraordinary products which showcase the range of possibilities that such a varied terroir in that huge country can provide.

In this tasting we sample Millet from Koval, Rye from Catoctin Creek in Virginia and from Balcones in Texas, a gentle Bourbon from Reservoir, an intense 100% Wheat from Reservoir, and finally the incredible smoked corn from Balcones: “Brimstone” which is made by bubbling Texas scrub oak smoke through the finished Whiskey.

Next Whiskey Wednesday: 19 / 06 at 20:00. The theme is: A Two-Way Road: Bourbon Meets Rye

Last time we tasted Rye whiskey, the “original” US whiskey, with its special flavour profile emphasising pepperiness and fruitiness.

Now we move on to the most famous kind of US whiskey: Bourbon. Instead of Rye, Bourbon is mainly Corn.

In this tasting we sample Bourbon from Koval, and Balcones, and compare them to Rye from Catoctin Creek and Reservoir. In addition we taste Henry McKenna Single Barrel Bottled in Bond which was chosen in March 2019 as “The World’s Best Whiskey” at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition. Only the second time a Bourbon has won this award.
